Most people on their first visit to Paris wish to visit the Louvre, to see the Mona Lisa. Since there are millions of visitors each and every year, this results in endless lines and crowds that make this experience anything but romantic.

What if you could enjoy the world’s largest collection of Claude Monet paintings and many other impressionist works of art, without having to put up with such crowds?

There was a line, but I got inside in less than 30 minutes

I stumbled upon the Marmottan Monet museum while taking a walk to see two of the ancient train stops on La Petite Ceinture, turned into fancy brasseries: Auteuil and Le Flandrin.

How To Buy Tickets

As I was walking along Boulevard Suchet from Porte de la Muette towards Porte d’Auteuil, I had the surprise to see a banner on a very elegant Belle Époque mansion, advertising a temporary exhibition, ‘Eugène Boudin, the father of Impressionism: a private collection’.

I hadn’t bought my ticket online, so I had to do the line at the entrance.

People coming with tickets were allowed access right away.

That was the Marmottan Monet museum, a true gem, hosted into this beautiful building in the elegant 16th arrondissement, near Bois de Boulogne.

As my long-planned trip to Giverny from Paris wasn’t going to happen any time soon because of the dark and stormy weather, the Marmottan Monet museum was exactly what I needed to get my impressionism fix for this spring.

Here are a few more reasons to add this hidden treasure to your Paris bucket list:

  • The personal touch: This isn’t just any Monet collection – it’s the artist’s own family collection, donated by his son Michel
  • Beyond the water lilies: While Giverny shows you where Monet lived, Marmottan shows you what he kept for himself
  • The complete picture: From his groundbreaking early works to his final, almost abstract late paintings – the full evolution of an artistic genius
  • Exclusive access: Paintings here that exist nowhere else, including works Monet never intended for public sale

Last but not least, visiting this museum is an excellent opportunity to take a glimpse into this area of Paris, with its amazingly clean air, with its huge trees and tranquil parks, with its perfect residential gardens and its merry birds chirping.

The 16th arrondissement is the perfect stage for your romance. Bring your date here to impress them.

The Swords Room – La Salle des Epées – Amazing Craft Work & Symbolism

La Salle des Epées (The Swords Room) hosts a collection of academicians’ swords.

Paul Marmottan bequeathed his home to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, which inherited the building and its collections at his death on March 15, 1932.This explains the presence of these swords as part of a permanent collection of the museum.

Even though I don’t care too much about swords and other weapons, I urge you to take a closer look at these amazing artifacts, as they are nothing short of amazing.

Each and every sword in the collection has a story – they are all so beautiful!

What I liked the most about the Marmottan Monet museum was the thoughtfully selected lighting.

The paintings were brighter than the environmental lights, therefore standing out in a beautiful, impressionist-style way.
